This has some validity, but if you’re hair is a mess and you haven’t been shaving, the clothes may not open as many doors as you’d like. Also, what’s wrong with the clothes that one already has?
Fashion may change, but personal style doesn’t have to. If you have your very own style, there is nothing wrong with that.
