Then I started working with the their actual IT department as the IT department helpdesk technician, which dealt more with the faculty and the student more with the faculty than the students.

Well, that’s because of the way the mechanical drives put things on to those little metal plates. Yeah, there’s little pits on there, and sometimes pieces of the file will get split to different areas of that, like a record, a needle on a record. Yeah. Some like some, you know, like you’re trying to pull up one document. Half of it’s on the outside of the disk and the other half of it’s on the inside.

It’s going to take longer for that file to open, because the head of the unit’s got to move from the outside to the inside, outside to inside to pull all the information before the document pops up on your screen. So the defrag searches for all those missing pits, and it moves them to a better physical location on that disk.
