There is something wholeheartedly endearing about Mike Schlossberg’s first foray into fiction. Something that is not unique to Schlossberg, or to myself, but which is often lost in science fiction is our humanity.

This is the story of a story. The journey from challenge to the blank page to false starts to the written word, from audio to backburner to more false starts to video. This is the process by which I wrote my first complete piece of fiction in ages and what I did with it after I finished the last draft.

Since it’s first incarnation years ago, the Small Oddities series has morphed into a kind of small and occasional DeviantArt Exhibition.
Part of that transformation is because while I am adept at using words, I am not an artist in the visual sense, so it’s nice to celebrate the artists I come across that take similar inspirations from the pop culture that I enjoy and turn them into their own works of art in various forms.

There is something more authentic and honest about this book than most biographies or autobiographies. Perhaps it’s the fact that this book is a collection of essays, stories, pictures, lists, images, and other ephemera created by Mike Diamond (Mike D), Adam Horovitz (Ad Rock), and their friends, assembled together in chronological order.
Or… Perhaps it’s just the fact that the Beastie Boys are the Beastie Boys.

Last year I continued with my friends’ A to Zed playlists and I even incorporated two thematic playlists with the Baseball Playlist and the DC Superhero Playlist. I plan to do a few more of these this year, starting with this Month by Month Playlist.
